Ballet is huge in New York, but I think many people overlook it. I have recently wanted to start going more. Last year, I went with my family to see ‘The Dream’, which I enjoyed. I loved the bright costumes that displayed so much character. Additionally, it was so interesting to see how they tell a story through choreography. I also saw their fall opening program last week, “Innovations Past and Present,” where they showcased two world premieres and a company staple. I really enjoyed the three bodies of work, but to be honest, I was paying more attention to how the costumes, lighting, and music come together to tell the story. I wish I had known more about ballet because one of the works paid a lot of homage to other ABT classics. One of my favorite parts of that day was when the couple behind us talked to the person next to them about how excited they were to be there because they were watching their daughter perform. I loved witnessing families being so supportive of each other.
Last week, the adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment, a psychological thriller, by the American Ballet Theater in the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center premiered. There are two acts and an epilogue. It will be interesting to see how they capture the essence of the novel and the characters feeling only through choreography.
I honestly had a lot of fun watching Ballet the two times I have been, even though I don’t understand all the concepts or know who the choreographers are. I want to see the Nutcracker performance in the upcoming weeks to get into the holiday spirit. Additionally, the Opera is supposedly super interesting; one of my closest friends always goes when she is in town, and she really enjoys it.
I hope this inspires you to purchase your ticket! Don’t forget you can’t take pictures during the performance, so I have no pictures.
