New York City is overflowing with incredible dining options, but with so many choices, finding the right one can be tricky—and, let’s be honest, pricey, too. While I love exploring new restaurants, there is nothing more disappointing than splurging on a hyped-up, expensive place that doesn’t live up to expectations.
With that in mind, I’ve put together a list of my top five upscale restaurants, in no particular order, perfect for special moments like birthdays, graduations, or any moment worth celebrating. These spots may be pricer, but they are worth it, not only for the food but also for the experience. One thing that makes these spots even more special to me is that they’ve always been accommodating to my severe food allergies, making me feel safe and welcome.
Bondst is one of my favorite upscale sushi restaurants that is not omakase. The original one is on Bond Street, but the one in Hudson Yards offers a stunning view of The Vessel while you enjoy your meal. The vibe there is modern and chic, perfect for a night out. My absolute favorites are the Big Eye Tuna Tart—I could have that all day—the rock shrimp and their Crispy Rice.
Milos is a Greek restaurant and my favorite one in town; nothing can beat it. The crow does lean towards families and older people, but their atmosphere is always welcoming. Their architecture always wows me; the space is so beautifully designed that I often admire it while waiting for food. As for my favorite dishes, I always go for the baked-in sea salt or grilled fish (of any kind!), the fried calamari, and their lamb chops. You simply can’t go wrong with any of these choices.
Like me, you must try Yoon if you are obsessed with Korean BBQ. The restaurant serves plenty of Banchan (side dishes) alongside excellent cuts of meat. I try a new cut every time I go, but my all-time favorites are the brisket and rib-eye. I still want to go back and try their other menu items. This place has become one of my top stops, and it sometimes competes with Milos.
As a Brazilian, I am always on the lookout for restaurants that remind me of home, and Churrascaria Plataforma is one of them that does just that. It is a classic all-you-can-eat, or as we call it, rodizio, where the meats are brought to your table until you can’t even eat anymore. It is perfect for large groups and celebrations; for me, it is a taste of home in NYC.
5. Cipriani
Cipriani may not be at the top of my food list, but it is a New York Classic. While the Soho location is known for its atmosphere and celebrity sightings, I prefer the one at Grand Central. It is calmer, and the view while people-watching from there is fantastic. My top picks on the menu are the Steak tartare and the tagliatelle.
Hope you get to try one of these restaurants in the future, and happy celebrations!
