Nestled in the heart of Greenwich Village, The Uncommons sits right in one of New York City's most vibrant neighborhoods, known for its lively arts scene, independent boutiques, and cozy cafes. Located just a short walk from NYU and Washington Square Park, the area has that laid-back, eclectic charm that makes it a perfect setting for this unique board game cafe. The spot draws in students, locals, and visitors alike, all looking to escape the typical bustle of the city and relax over a game or two.
I recently visited The Uncommons, a board game cafe tucked in Greenwich Village, and it was such a unique experience! The vibe is cozy and fun, with shelves filled to the brim with games—everything from classics like Monopoly and Scrabble to niche games I’d never heard of. Walking in, there was an instant buzz, with people deeply engaged in games, laughing, strategizing, and just enjoying being present together.
Finding a seat took a little patience (it’s popular!), but the wait was totally worth it. My friends and I picked out a few games to try; the selection can feel overwhelming, but the staff was super helpful, making recommendations based on our interests. We started with something light and then tried a more strategic game, which turned out to be an intense (but friendly) competition.
They served coffee, tea, snacks, and small bites, which kept us going as we played. It’s not a full meal spot, but the snacks were great for a pick-me-up between rounds. The place charges a small cover fee for game access, which is fair considering the vast selection and upkeep of the games.
Overall, The Uncommons feels like a refreshing break from the usual bar or cafe scene—a chance to slow down, disconnect from screens, and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun. Whether you’re a hardcore board gamer or just looking for a chill spot to hang with friends, it’s worth checking out. Just go early if you want a guaranteed seat!
